The Natural Fiber Swaps Guide: Baby Basics
Baby is the category where I am the strictest, and I do not think that is even a little bit controversial. Newborn skin is thinner and more permeable than adult skin, babies sleep 14 plus hours a day wrapped in these fabrics, and the mainstream baby aisle is full of polyester fleece sleepers treated with things I would not put on myself, let alone a newborn.
One honest note up front: I do not have a baby, so nothing in this guide is a personal pick. I researched this guide the way I research everything, checking contents and certifications brand by brand, because I wanted the baby version held to the same standard as the rest of this series.
Here is how this guide works. 🌿 marks a cleanest option and 💲 marks the budget option, the cheapest one that still follows the rules. Every entry prints the full material contents, a Dyes line with what the brand actually states about its dyes, and a Certifications line with the third party certifications the product carries. Inside each cleanest list, products with a product level GOTS certification come first, brand level GOTS claims come after them, and products with no GOTS certification come last. Where a certification covers only part of a product, the entry says so.
Onesies and Bodysuits
🌿 Short Sleeve Bodysuit, Under the Nile, $16 for one bodysuit. 100% GOTS certified organic Egyptian cotton, in plain solid colorways.
Dyes: Free of Azo colorants
Certifications: GOTS
🌿 Organic Kimono Bodysuit, L'ovedbaby, $25 for one bodysuit. 100% GOTS certified organic cotton. The range is minimalist and tagless.
Dyes: Azo free, non toxic, eco friendly dyes
Certifications: GOTS, OEKO-TEX
🌿 Organic Baby Bodysuit, Colored Organics, $24 for one bodysuit. 100% organic cotton interlock with nickel free snaps.
Dyes: AZO / heavy metal free, eco friendly water based dyes
Certifications: GOTS (brand level claim)
💲 Bodysuits, 5 Pack, Burt's Bees Baby, $27.95 for a pack of five. 100% organic cotton, combed and ring spun.
Dyes: Made without harsh dyes
Certifications: GOTS (brand level claim)
💲 Organic Bodysuits, 3 Pack, Little Planet by Carter's, $16 for a pack of three. Organic cotton. One caution with Little Planet: check the individual style before you buy, because some pieces in this line are blends with recycled polyester. Only the 100% organic cotton styles belong in this guide.
Dyes: Not stated by the brand
Certifications: GOTS
Newborn Take Home Sets
🌿 Take Home Set, Quincy Mae, $44 for the set. 100% organic cotton in a soft, lightweight waffle knit. The set is a bonnet, a wrap snap and tie top, and footed drawstring pants, in the muted green colorway Laurel. This is the first outfit, the one a baby comes home in, and it is one of the most gifted items on a registry, which is exactly why it gets its own section.
Dyes: Non toxic, AZO free dyes (brand statement)
Certifications: GOTS
Sleep Sacks
🌿 Ultimate Sleep Bag, Woolino, $109 for the 2 month to 2 year size and $129 for the toddler size. A 100% natural merino wool lining inside a GOTS certified organic cotton outer, with a two way YKK zipper and no synthetic fill. The merino regulates temperature across seasons, so one bag replaces the pile of TOG rated bags most parents end up buying. The certification framing matters here, so here it is exactly: the GOTS certification covers the cotton outer, the wool lining carries Woolmark and RWS certification, and the whole bag carries OEKO-TEX certification.
Dyes: Not stated by the brand
Certifications: OEKO-TEX (whole bag), GOTS (cotton outer only), Woolmark (wool lining), RWS (wool lining)
🌿 Organic Sleep Sack, Parade Organics, $42 for one sleep sack. Two layers of 100% organic cotton with no filling, rated TOG 1.25, with a two way YKK zipper.
Dyes: AZO free dyes
Certifications: GOTS
💲 Ecolino Organic Cotton Classic Sleep Bag, Woolino, from $29.50 for one sleep bag ($29.50 for 0 to 6 months, $37 for 6 to 18 months, $43 for 18 to 36 months). 100% organic cotton. A GOTS certified sleep bag under $30 in the smallest size is the strongest budget find in this entire guide.
Dyes: Not stated by the brand; the product is GOTS certified, so its dyes are GOTS approved dyes
Certifications: GOTS, OEKO-TEX
💲 Beekeeper Wearable Blanket, Burt's Bees Baby, $27 to $30 for one wearable blanket. 100% organic cotton in a medium weight jersey, with no fill.
Dyes: Not stated by the brand
Certifications: GOTS (brand level claim)
One honest note on the brand everyone asks about: Kyte Baby's sleep bag is 97% bamboo rayon and 3% spandex, and its filling is 100% polyester. Bamboo rayon is a regenerated fiber, dissolved and re-spun, so it is not a natural fiber the way cotton and wool are, and it does not belong in this guide even though the brand carries OEKO-TEX certification.
Crib Sheets
One fit note before the picks: both Naturepedic sheets come in standard crib size only, and the brand states they do not fit mini cribs, so mini crib owners need a different brand entirely.
🌿 Organic Sateen Crib Sheet, Naturepedic, $29 for one standard sheet. 100% GOTS certified organic cotton sateen, 300 thread count, in Ivory and White.
Dyes: No GOTS-prohibited synthetic dyes
Certifications: GOTS, MADE SAFE
🌿 Breathable Organic Cotton Muslin Crib Sheet, Naturepedic, $39 for one standard sheet. Two layer GOTS certified organic cotton muslin, in ten muted colors.
Dyes: Low impact dye methods
Certifications: GOTS, MADE SAFE
💲 Organic Fitted Crib Sheet, Burt's Bees Baby, $17.95 to $21.95 for one sheet. 100% organic cotton in a breathable jersey knit. Even at the top of that range it is the cheapest verified GOTS certified crib sheet I found, and it is stocked everywhere, which matters at 2am.
Dyes: Not stated by the brand
Certifications: GOTS (brand level claim)
Crib Mattresses
This category needs its own framing, stated plainly: no crib mattress at any price is 100% natural fiber. Cores are steel coils, latex, coconut coir, or polyethylene, and waterproof surfaces are plastic films. So this one category is ranked by certification and full disclosure instead of by the fiber rule, and every non fiber material is named in the entries rather than smoothed over.
🌿 Classic Organic Cotton Crib Mattress, Naturepedic, from $279 (Lightweight $279, Lightweight 2-Stage $299, Innerspring 2-Stage $339). GOTS certified organic cotton fabric and fill. The catches, printed on purpose: the lightweight core is food grade polyethylene foam, the innerspring version is steel coils, the 2 stage versions add PLA layers on the toddler side, and the waterproof surface on every Naturepedic model is polyethylene made from non-GMO sugarcane. It is food grade and it replaces vinyl and phthalate waterproofing, which is a genuine improvement, and it is still a plastic.
Dyes: Not stated by the brand beyond excluding heavy metal dyes; the mattress is GOTS certified, so its dyes are GOTS approved dyes
Certifications: GOTS, EWG Verified, MADE SAFE, GREENGUARD Gold
🌿 Breathable Organic 2-Stage Crib Mattress, Naturepedic, from $369. The same GOTS certified organic cotton fabric and fill and the same core choices as the Classic, plus a removable, machine washable breathable cover. The cover catch matters and comes from the brand's own materials list: the breathable cover is built with a polyester lattice, a TPU waterproof layer, and an elastane elastic band. The surface the baby touches is organic cotton, and the breathable structure underneath it is synthetic.
Dyes: Not stated by the brand beyond excluding heavy metal dyes; the mattress is GOTS certified, so its dyes are GOTS approved dyes
Certifications: GOTS, EWG Verified, MADE SAFE, GREENGUARD Gold
🌿 Emily Organic Crib Mattress, My Green Mattress, $339 on sale (list $399) for one mattress. Organic latex and coconut coir, with a quilted cover of 100% GOTS organic cotton and wool, and the wool is the flame barrier. This is the natural material build for readers who would rather have latex and coir in the core than polyethylene. It is not waterproof, so it needs a separate waterproof protector.
Dyes: Not stated by the brand; the product is GOTS certified, so its dyes are GOTS approved dyes
Certifications: GOTS, GOLS, MADE SAFE, GREENGUARD Gold
🌿 Organic Crib Mattress, Avocado, $599 for one mattress. Certified organic cotton, wool, and latex over steel coils, handmade in California. It has no waterproof surface, so it needs a separate waterproof protector, and latex and wool are allergens for some babies, which is the exact concern the Naturepedic line designs around.
Dyes: Not stated by the brand; the product is GOTS certified, so its dyes are GOTS approved dyes
Certifications: GOTS, OEKO-TEX, MADE SAFE, GREENGUARD Gold, EWG Verified
💲 Healthy Support Waterproof Crib Mattress, Lullaby Earth, $179 for one mattress. Food grade polyethylene and polyester, including recycled polyester fill, with food grade polyethylene waterproofing. Lullaby Earth is Naturepedic's lower priced sister line. This one has no organic cotton and no GOTS certification, and it is included because of its MADE SAFE, GREENGUARD Gold, and EWG Verified certifications.
Dyes: Not stated by the brand
Certifications: MADE SAFE, GREENGUARD Gold, EWG Verified
Baby Blankets
🌿 Organic Waffle Baby Blanket, Naturepedic, $39 for one blanket, about 30 by 40 inches. GOTS certified organic cotton in a waffle weave, in muted colors like Arctic Snow, Buttercream, Pebble Grey, Sage, and Sand. It works as a receiving and stroller blanket as well.
Dyes: Low impact dye methods
Certifications: GOTS, MADE SAFE
🌿 Organic Receiving Blanket, L'ovedbaby, $39 for one blanket. 100% GOTS certified organic cotton in a double layered knit. Get a solid colorway.
Dyes: Azo free, non toxic, eco friendly dyes
Certifications: GOTS, OEKO-TEX
🌿 Pointelle Baby Blanket, Quincy Mae, $42 for one blanket. 100% organic cotton in a pointelle knit. The brand sells this blanket in solid Slate, Natural, and Dusty Rose on its own site; the ShopMy tile is the Blue Ditsy colorway, a small muted blue floral on a natural ground.
Dyes: Non toxic, AZO free dyes (brand statement)
Certifications: GOTS
🌿 Merino Wool Knitted Baby Blanket, Woolino, $79.95 list for one blanket. 100% natural merino wool, knitted, with no synthetic content listed.
Dyes: Not stated by the brand
Certifications: OEKO-TEX, Woolmark
💲 Baby Organic Cotton Textured Knit Blanket, Little Planet by Carter's, $28 for one blanket, 30 by 40 inches. 100% organic cotton in a textured knit, in solid Cream and Gray. This is the budget blanket because its certification and its plain colorways both check out. One level deeper and you are into polyester plush, which is exactly what this guide exists to replace.
Dyes: Not stated by the brand
Certifications: GOTS (brand level claim)
Swaddles
Swaddles are one of the most gifted baby items there are, and the popular ones are mostly bamboo viscose marketed as natural. These are the real cotton ones.
🌿 Breathable Organic Cotton Muslin Swaddle Blankets, 4 Pack, Naturepedic, $89 for a pack of four. 100% GOTS certified organic cotton muslin, two layers, garment washed, 47 by 47 inches each, in four coordinating muted colors rather than prints.
Dyes: Made without harsh dyes
Certifications: GOTS, MADE SAFE
🌿 Woven Swaddle, Quincy Mae, $35 for one swaddle. 100% organic cotton in a crinkled washed weave. One honest note on colorways: this style comes only in prints and checks, so the linked colorway is Winter Berry, a small berry print on a natural ground. It earns its place on the fabric and the certification, which are exactly right.
Dyes: Non toxic, AZO free dyes (brand statement)
Certifications: GOTS
💲 Organic Cotton Muslin Swaddle Blankets, 2 Pack, Little Planet by Carter's, about $28 for a pack of two. 100% organic cotton muslin. The 2 pack pairs a solid grey with a stripe, and these are the smallest swaddles in this guide at 30 by 40 inches.
Dyes: Not stated by the brand; the product is GOTS certified, so its dyes are GOTS approved dyes
Certifications: GOTS
Pajamas and Footies
🌿 Organic Snap Footie, L'ovedbaby, $38 for one footie. 100% GOTS certified organic cotton.
Dyes: Azo free, non toxic, eco friendly dyes
Certifications: GOTS, OEKO-TEX
🌿 Pointelle Wrap Footie, Quincy Mae, $39 for one footie. 100% organic cotton pointelle, in the solid colorway Midnight.
Dyes: Non toxic, AZO free dyes (brand statement)
Certifications: GOTS
🌿 Wrap Knit Footie, Quincy Mae, $38 for one footie. 100% organic cotton knit, in the solid colorway Heathered Dusty Blue. This one is lay flat to dry.
Dyes: Non toxic, AZO free dyes (brand statement)
Certifications: GOTS
🌿 One-Piece Baby Pajamas, Monica + Andy, $34 for one pair of footed pajamas. 100% organic cotton, snug fitting, and free of lead, phthalates, and flame retardants. Get a solid or a soft classic stripe, not the character prints.
Dyes: Not stated by the brand
Certifications: GOTS (brand level claim)
🌿 Merino Wool Footie Pajamas, Woolino, $49.99 for one footie. Pure Australian merino wool, with no synthetic blend listed, in plain colorways (Dove, Oat, Sage, Blush, and Blue). It pairs naturally with the Woolino sleep sack above.
Dyes: Not stated by the brand
Certifications: OEKO-TEX, Woolmark, RWS
💲 Organic Sleep and Play, Burt's Bees Baby, $13.95 for one sleep and play. 100% organic cotton. At this price there is no excuse left for a polyester sleeper.
Dyes: Made without harsh dyes
Certifications: GOTS (brand level claim)
💲 Organic Sleeper (Sleep and Play), Burt's Bees Baby, $18.95 for one sleeper. 100% organic cotton, with the feet at 98% organic cotton and 2% spandex.
Dyes: Made without harsh dyes
Certifications: GOTS (brand level claim)
Bath Towels and Washcloths
The mainstream default here is polyester microfiber and cotton polyester blends, so a clean version is a real swap.
🌿 Organic Cotton Muslin Oversized Washcloths, 3-Pack, aden + anais, $28.99 for a pack of three. Organic cotton muslin, from the brand's GOTS certified organic line.
Dyes: Not stated by the brand; the product is GOTS certified, so its dyes are GOTS approved dyes
Certifications: GOTS
🌿 Baby Hooded Towel, Weezie, $48 for one towel, 30 by 30 inches. 100% organic long staple cotton, made in Portugal, in plain colors. It is not GOTS certified, so it runs as the organic OEKO-TEX option rather than a GOTS cleanest pick.
Dyes: Not stated by the brand
Certifications: OEKO-TEX
Bibs and Burp Cloths
Read the backing on any bib you consider beyond this list: plenty of cotton bibs hide a polyester layer, and many popular muslin bib brands are bamboo viscose blends.
🌿 Organic Cotton Muslin Burpy Bibs, 2-Pack, aden + anais, $27.99 for a pack of two. Organic cotton muslin, from the brand's GOTS certified organic line.
Dyes: Not stated by the brand; the product is GOTS certified, so its dyes are GOTS approved dyes
Certifications: GOTS
🌿 Quarry Solid Organic Baby Burp Cloths, Pack of 3, Burt's Bees Baby, $17.95 for a pack of three. 100% organic cotton, 2 ply, in solid colorways (Quarry, Cloud, Pink Sand, and Midnight).
Dyes: Not stated by the brand
Certifications: GOTS (brand level claim)
🌿 Organic Baby Bandana Bibs, Pack of 3, Burt's Bees Baby, $14.95 for a pack of three. 100% organic cotton, in solid Hummus, Pink Sand, and Sea Foam.
Dyes: Not stated by the brand
Certifications: GOTS (brand level claim)
Baby Socks
A short category, because socks are a classic polyester and nylon trap and one clean pick is enough.
🌿 Organic Baby Socks, Pure (No Dye), 3-Pack, Q for Quinn, $23 for a pack of three pairs. 98% organic cotton and 2% elastane. The 2% elastane is the functional stretch a sock needs to stay on a foot. The trims are disclosed too, the way they should be: the seam thread includes recycled OEKO-TEX polyester thread, and the elastics are an OEKO-TEX polyester and elastane blend. This is the same brand as the cleanest socks pick in the Women's guide.
Dyes: Undyed. Natural, dye free
Certifications: GOTS, OEKO-TEX (trims only)
Toys
Almost every plush toy on the market is polyester fabric stuffed with polyester fill. These are the natural material options, starting with the rare one that is organic cotton inside and out.
🌿 Organic Stuffed Animals, Naturepedic, $59 for one animal ($99 for the bear sold with a blanket). Fabric and fill are both GOTS certified organic cotton, with no plastic components and no synthetic materials anywhere in the toy. Eight animals, each about 12.6 by 12.6 by 6.7 inches, made in a GOTS certified facility, and 10% of each purchase goes to the Wildlife Conservation Network. Two honest notes: they are spot clean only, and plush does not belong in the crib during sleep.
Dyes: Not stated by the brand; the product is GOTS certified, so its dyes are GOTS approved dyes
Certifications: GOTS, MADE SAFE
🌿 Stuffed Animal Toy (Monkey), Under the Nile, $24 for one toy. Made and stuffed with 100% organic Egyptian cotton. The fill being cotton is the detail that matters most in this category. Individual styles rotate and sell out, so the exact animal needs choosing when you shop.
Dyes: Free of Azo colorants
Certifications: GOTS
🌿 Kawan Duck Teether, Hevea, about $20 to $26 for one teether. 100% natural rubber from the Hevea brasiliensis tree, in a one piece design with no holes, so no mold can grow inside. The solid colors include Marshmallow White and Tan Beige.
Dyes: Natural pigments
Certifications: none
🌿 Baby Car, PlanNatural Version, PlanToys, $37.99 for one car. Natural rubberwood, assembled with E-Zero formaldehyde free glue. The wood is glued construction rather than a raw carved block, and that is stated here rather than smoothed over.
Dyes: Organic pigments and water based dyes
Certifications: none
The Take
If a baby in your life gets one thing from this guide, make it the sleep sack or the sleeper. Sleep is the longest, warmest, closest contact a baby has with fabric, and it is the easiest swap to make because you only need a few of them in rotation.
And buy the plain ones. The prints are cute for exactly one photo, and the plain organic pieces are the ones that get handed down three times.
